SUSTAINABILITY
At Alimentos Prosalud we focus on controlling, reducing and offsetting our environmental footprint, and this is reflected in our many programs. We are proud of the numerous environmental and sustainability certifications we have earned.
We are aware of the importance of caring for the environment, to leave this world a better place for the next generations. That’s why we have multiple initiatives and programs to protect our natural resources.
CLEAN BEACHES
One of Costa Rica’s most exotic natural beauties – a source of great admiration and pride – is our beaches, and since our raw material comes from the sea, we do volunteering with our employees, who in their free time clean up trash on the beach. Since 2010 we have held more than 14 cleanup days on Costa Rican beaches, and since 2015 we have held three tree-plantings in different areas.
RECYCLING PROGRAM
2018 saw the launch of the Ecolones Program, a public-private partnership whose goal is to promote a culture of recycling and provide the domestic community a way to monetize and give value to its clean, separated and categorized waste. Alimentos Prosalud decided to become one of the major sponsors of this far-reaching initiative and to join in the national effort to promote recycling.
WE RAISE OUR FLAG FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
We have an ongoing commitment to continually improve our environmental indicators. The result? For four years in a row we have earned the Ecological Blue Flag. The Ecological Blue Flag program recognizes and encourages good environmental practices across key consumption indicators including: electricity, fuel, water, paper, refrigerants, waste management, staff training and community outreach activities.
WATER TREATMENT PLANT
We are committed to raising awareness on protection of resources, and water is for the exception. We have taken this task very seriously with effective environmentally sustainable practices that protect our rivers and seas from waste. We’ve achieved this thanks to our water treatment plant, which filters, processes and purifies 98% of the water we use for reuse in irrigation, production and energy savings.
FISH MEAL PLANT
Our facilities include a flour production a fish meal plant that processes by products from tuna and sardine processing. These by products are cooked, ground and dried. Then the solids and fats are separated to create the end products: fish meal and fish oil. These are then marketed as raw material for animal feed.
RESPONSIBLE FISHERY
FISHING ZONES
Fishing vessels have to cover great distances to keep up with fish swimming in schools or shoals. Alimentos Prosalud receives whole tuna from many fisheries, including those of the eastern and western Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans. We process species such as yellowfin, skipjack, bigeye and albacore tuna.
RESPONSIBLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FISHERY
Purse-seine fishing is a method aimed at ocean sustainability. It is used for catching fish that customarily swim in dense schools or shoals, such as sardines and tuna. The method is environmentally friendly, since it helps preserve other ocean species such as dolphins and turtles by ensuring they are not trapped in the net. We also purchase FAD-free and pole-and-line-caught fish. For more information on this method, click here.
SOCIAL
UNITED FOR OUR CHILDREN
In 2000, Alimentos Prosalud strengthened its ties to the community of Puntarenas, where our plant is located through committing to increasing the survival rates of newborns at the Monseñor Sanabria Hospital. In its determination to reduce the area’s infant mortality rate, Alimentos Prosalud has donated, over a five-year period, highly specialized medical equipment such as incubators, monitors, and a specially equipped ambulance for the hospital’s neonatal unit.
DONATION OF BOOKS AND HELP WITH INFRASTRUCTURE
In addition, the company has a scholarship program to help our youth with an outstanding academic performance in the hopes of laying the foundations for a promising future. To date, we have visited more than 227 schools and delivered 110,000 books. Part of our program has included donating more than 180,000 cans of tuna throughout the year to 150 schools.
ON BOARD WITH THE PINK RIBBON
In 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, Alimentos Prosalud made major contributions to the Pink Campaign of FUNDESO (Fundación Nacional de Solidaridad para el Cáncer de Mama).
This foundation helps women with limited resources deal with breast cancer by providing housing, food, medical testing, and psychological and emotional support.
ON DECK WITH THE TELETHON
Alimentos ProSalud participated in the Telethon, both as a company and through its employees, whose contributions to the Solidarity Association went to helping the National Children’s Hospital with its project for infrastructure and palliative care medical equipment.
SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE WHO NEED US MOST
Since 1998, Alimentos Prosalud has been on hand in national emergencies, donating a truckload of product (96,000 cans of tuna) on each occasion. We have thus been able to help the victims of hurricanes such as Mitch, Otto and Nate. We have also donated product to different social welfare organizations such as the Asociación Obras del Espíritu Santo and the Food Bank.
CERTIFICATIONS
Our work has been recognized and evaluated by different national and international agencies, who have certified us for our responsible and sustainable practices in environmental protection. This has opened the doors to us for exporting our brands to the rest of the world.
